With a rich and tortuous history, Kortrijk is one of the most interesting
towns in Belgium. It was a centre of Flemish uprisings in the 1300's and a
series of defeats and victories in battles against the French are still
celebrated today. Known as an education hub in Belgium, Kortrijk has a
dozen or so museums and an uncountable number of excellent restaurants.
Long a textile centre, this industry is still important to Kortrijk. It is
said students are only allowed to graduate from one of the 55 educational
institutions in the town when they can finally spell (and pronounce),
Kortrijk. |
