Although Charleroi is primarily an industrial town, its history extends back
into the mists of Europe's prehistoric past. Known as the ugliest city in
Belgium, if Charleroi can be described as anything good, it would be,
"practical."
For this reason, you won't see too many tours to Charleroi but that doesn't
mean it is totally unworthy of a visit.
The community is surrounded by coal mines and famous for its corrupt, Socialist politicians.
We're looking for someone who has actually had a good time in Charleroi
(other than the Socialists, of course),
so, please send in your comments if they can give us any idea as to why this
town should be on the tourism map.
Prior to the Belgian Revolution in 1830, Charleroi was fought over and
subsequently owned by the Dutch, the Spanish, the French and the Austrians.
It is unknown as to whether the town was forced upon the winners or the
losers of those conflicts.
When Belgium became a free state, part of the price it paid was to keep
ownership of Charleroi. |
